July 2007

updated by michael 31st July 2007:

As i am sitting down here in my studio at 3am now, many thoughts flashing through my mind. Student intakes sore up lately and i almost hardly can find time to accept any more new students. In other words, i have stop taking in new students at the moment. This scenario may paint the wrong picture for many reading this. First, a teacher full of students is definitely NOT a good thing (unless you owned your own music school / studios). Secondly, music education in Alor Star is by NO means a good business, especially if you are in the contemporary line (non-classical).

I came from a classical back groud but hated teaching classical. I am not a pure classical guy (not a pure classical guy = i will fall asleep listening to classical music). The reason i brought up the term "classical music" is because only this genre will survive and make it big in a small town. Since many many years back, the ABRSM Royal School of Music had planted the mentality of learning classical is the best you can ask for in music education. However, i must say classical music is NO WHERE near the excitement, adventure, knowledge, exposure, and many x-factors of contemporary music. Here's a chart for you to compare:

Classical Music                                                 Other Contemporary (Pop, Blues, Jazz)
-most people thinking this got "class"                   only learn for fun and will drop soon you reach PMR, SPM, form 6, college, whatever...
-high learning fees (good for teacher)                   low learning fee
-life style of rich and not so rich                           school kids, church bands, fun clubs, life style for the poorer?? certainly not
-well established (major piece of the pie)             still struggling to make impact in local education market (the topping of the pie only)
-learn classical music                                           learn everything
-play in orchestras, ensamble, duet, solo?            play in everything and every form (depend on your capabilities off course)

As i was writing the first paragraph, i had lots of idea, but now... cant figure out anything. Suddenly i felt quite tired, playing in 3 bands, guiding 4 bands, teaching over 70 students, and getting paid less than 2k. Ah huh! now you know how bad it is contemporary music education in Alor Star. But, still, the passion for music, passion for teaching every student, bringing out their best is always there. I put 200% in educating my students and I do really TL those who do not put in effort as much as i gave.. i wish i have total control over all my students and able to hand-pick who i want to teach and who i want to kick. Do not blame me for this. I am just your educator, you are fully responsible for ringing yourself to where you want to be. You can never find a music teacher doing all these~

-prearping website for students                -gathering music articles for students            -taking the BIG trouble to rate EVERY student EVERY month
-setting up bands for students                   -programming backing tracks for studetns   -taking and uploading video of student performance
-giving FREE extra class if 100% needed    -lend you an electric guitar for more than a year (not applicable already)

-taking students to gigs and explaining what to learn from observation
-sourcing cheap and good musical instruments for students without taking a penny (unless you insist..keke)
-take so much time to ORGANISE special events, shows, jam sessions for students without being paid extra
-take photos, put on website, write FULL report of each students' performance and publish on website.
-organising trial music exams with no extra charge
-rewarding outstanding students with gifts

If you find a music teacher doing all these, yes, i mean, all of these, then please let me know.

Hereby annoucing i will cut more than half of the students and move into other music lines besides teaching by the end of this year. Work hard if you want to be part of michael-one.com by then, cause i dont care how you think i am LanSi or wat. I will talk about what type of students make me always looking forward to teach them, to see them again right after their lesson just ended; and also what type of students i wish i never have to teach.

June 2007

How were you ranked in Hall of Fame:

Since the day i announced "Bottom 3" also gonna make the headlines soon, many students have asked on the format of ranking and marks calculations. Actually, every student was briefed on the rankings on their first few lessons, but guess not many paid attention to as it was not a big thing since there were no "Bottom 3" exist then. But now, story is different.

Piano and Guitar students have different points calculations.

Piano:

Since piano emphasizes both on practical and theory, equal marks are allocated to both sections, else, all same as Guitar.

Attendance ~ 5 marks         Practical ~ 6 marks       Theory ~ 6 marks       Other ~ 3 marks

Attendance: Easy 5 marks, you come, you gained 5 marks already. But, you come on time, not late or last minute postponement. If lesson is postponed to another date (which you have informed at least 24 hours earlier, then you will still gain marks but not all 5 marks). This is to encourage regular lessons attendance and DISCOURAGE lesson postponements, no matter ...... (visit www.uglymen.net for full article on 15th June 2007).

1st November 2006

Welcome back to Michael-One.com after hibernating for more than two months. During the past two months, it's been so hectic that most of the time michael could not even upload a simple Hall of Fame file. He has thought of changing the entire site into a blog, easing off the tasks of organising frames, and by-passing FTP. However, after thinking a while, he continued using this designed site as the official site for all his music courier related works. And yes, you might also be curious that the pronoun "he" is being used, michael no longer update this site and michael-one is now managed by two good friends. Oh, by the way, my name is Angel, and the other guy is Sim.

As you have noticed, we changed the site into simpler design for easier browsing and reading. we will try to get some updates from michael at least once a week, bringing you news about students adventures and mike's projects (if any). Since putting up this site in 2003, most of the students find it useful where they can see how they fared in each months' lessons through the Hall of Fame, and view their own photos from their performances. A new Download area has been added above in the main menu, which will include mike's sample music works, and also students perfromance videos from time to time. We got to know that michael does not have a quality videocam (sigh...) so bare with the video quality in the Download area. Meanwhile, we have shifted many of the previous menus into the above main menu bar, you may want to browse through for sub-contents. For students area, we will include a thumbnail photo of each (subject to availability and only in the era of after michael's digital camera purchase). As mike has not send us all of them and that excludes some students who do not want to be shown here for a certain reason, there are students whose photos were left out. There are sections still have not been openned, we will shift up a gear and hope to update every thing else soon.

Approaching 2007, it is the 15th year mike working as an music educator, perfomer, composer, and arranger, we will get mike to talk about some of his memorable moments throught out these wonderful years. On behalf of mike, michael-one wish to thank all students for making it a highly successful teaching journey so far for him. If you need an urgent reply regarding this web site or any enquiries, please write to rainbow_angel@singapore.com, else, you can write direct to mike at michael@michael-one.com (he wll try to reply you as soon as possible).

Current main activities / project involved:

1) Theory Study Group for Trinity exam (Nov 06)
2) Uglymen upcoming shows (November, December 06, Feb 07 Singapore)

Life good in singapore?) I no longer write lyrics for Uglymen since it takes too much time for me to figure out what to write, or else I wouldnt have written "This Song Only Three Words Long".

-Added GLAY as one of my current favourite bands, not really into them, but love a few of their songs which i don't know how to pronouce.

-Going to dye my hair soon to purple colour, anyone wants to introduce me where can get cheaper services (in Alor Setar only)? Thanks.

-My humble review on Tiger Beer Band Competition:
All the bands were good, all were worthy winners, all played well, all very creative,
one of the judges also very handsome (see in Gallery).
One thing no one knows was I actually took 5 medicines and 3 pumps of nebulizer before
going on stage, luckily i DID NOT die that night. This coming 13th Aug, I wil dive off the
stage without taking any medicine. Surprisingly for that night (tiger beer) i did not feel extremely
tired like normally after banging Si Ai Bin.

                                                  THE NEW BASSIST

25th April 2005

Finally finally finally.... I can sit down, in the confinement of my studio, switching on the air cond, playing some Jason Mraz CDs, with a HUGE cup of milo ice, I am writing on this website so freely and without any time constrain for the first time in 2005.

Way back the months have been so bumpy and cramped. As I write this, 12.33am Monday morning, ha ha, Monday is the only day I am free for more than 6 hours, no lessons, no "investment business" and I can sleep till real late later...

So where do I start, hmm.... so sorry for not updating the 26th Feb 2005 Alor Setar Mall pics and stories. But dont worry, tonight I'm gonna scan those photos, or should I say transfer those photos from my MMC card to my PC. These photos are taken by my very close "brother" Kooy Eng Yeow.... and .... DAMN! Newcastle scored a goal against MU, MU is a gooner now...hai, I guess I will change all my MU stickers to Jose Mourinho's face.

oh...sorry...hehe.. back to the 26th Feb gig. After a few weeks, I actually talked to a few friends on the show, most of them enjoyed a lot and some sang along. One of my elder students Jackie Lim brought his entire family to the show and they loved Bubble Tea a lot. Some of my students also told me paise-ly.... eh...Michael, it's time to put down your weight. :-O

We did not manage to video-tape the show as there were no camcorders available but you can click here to view a handful of photos :-)

Last week, we were very excited while jemming as some friends paid a visit to the studio,
Kelvyn "Malmsteen" Yeang was there, and also Cheang Hui, a very ambitious and enterprising teen, and some of his friends too. Cheang Hui is organising a HUGE show/event in Penang on 30th May 2005. And Uglymen feel very honoured to be able to be part of the show.

Event: Light Da Fusion
Date: 30th May 2005
Time: 7.30pm-12am
Details: HipHop, Rock, Breakdance, Food and Beverages
Entrance: I think is RM12 (not very sure)
Venue: Dewan Masyarakat Penyayang, Penang.

And finally, the piece of news that made us really excited for the first time for more than 2 months, I saw taisuan wrote in detail in uglymen.net, so i just cut and paste the except here:

Taisuan wrote:

Next week, 2nd May 2005, UGLYMEN is going down to KL to shoot a new TV series called "HOME GROWN". it's an info-tainment programme by 8TV. This is a programme that tells the story of local indie bands of malaysia and we are one of the 13 selected bands in the country to be featured/interviewed. This is basically a show for unknown bands that played underground or upper ground without the support of big music labels -- more of a DIY kinda thing.

This show is not meant to feature Search, Wings, Spider etc no no no. it's a unknown series programme. it's a 13 episodes of pre-recorded showwhere each episode will feature a local indie band. each of these bands will play 3 songs live and interviews will be held with the bands in the programme. there are other segments to be featured as well where local pros (musicians, producers, sound engineers etc) will be giving tips on living the edge in the music world - how to do it right, how to survive in music world, how to do good with your music. nevertheless, it's gonna be FUN ALL THE WAY.

the purpose of this programme is to INJECT info-tainment/news/awareness of local indie bands and share with viewers/society regarding the lives of indie bands and how they pursue their musical dreams without the stains of corporate directions. it tells the hardship of each bands, how they group together, the problems they face and how they balance their music and life. other bands featuring are: tempered mental, love me butch, 7 collar t-shirts etc. we are shooting at 1 UTAMA, near uptown (where is that?). we'll announce again in which episode we'll appear with date and time. check it out here!

haha save my time of writing all the above. Yes..... finally Rooney scored one goal back for MU, is it too late??? we'll have to wait and see.

Next, coming into May and June, there will be many sayonaras in Alsictry, with Heng Lih, Seok Kheng, Wooi Min, San Sit, Soo Peng, Mohd Azlan, Sze Rin (inactive), all leaving for further studies. I sincerely wish them good luck and go all the way striving but enjoying the life in university or college. Hmm... since i still have some time here... its 1.12am now. Let me talk briefly on the above students. Heng Lih is a great student to teach, I must say the determination and passion of music he has is almost second to none, it has been a real pleasure to teach him and I hope he will continue playing guitar beyond this coming June. Seok Kheng has a unique attitude on approaching music lesson, which I dont really know how to describe in words, and I must admit she is my MOST successful electric guitar students (girl) in recent years, in addition, she also landed the Best Guitar Player award in 2005. Wooi Min...hehehe....Wooi Min.... what can I say, she is pretty, nice, and a girl who really knows how to enjoy life. She is not leaving for studies though, but has been transferred to work in Singapore for 1 year by her company. Mohd Azlan, San Sit and Soo Peng are taking lessons for 3 months from April to June 2005, smart choice of choosing to learn music for passtimes before entering the hectic university schedule. Finally, Sze Rin, she is the only student to have did every single homework for more than 2 years. She is special and hard work also won her Best Piano Player for the year 2004. I will miss them all!!

As i was writing, Wes Brown scored second goal for MU, its 2-1 now, but MU give 1 1/2 ball!
i need one more goal!!!! 2 minutes left, i think it's a little too late. (1.30am)

Oh Yeah! Thanks to Heng Lih for writing the feedback, make me want to cry lo.... kekeke...
You can go to "I Say" section to read it.

Well, guess this time gotta pen off here, thanks for reading, take care, good luck and adiossss.

18th April 2005
Uglymen have came up with 2 new songs for the second album ( So paise to say this cause even first album also not out yet, kekeke...) Ah hemm, anyway, the 2 songs are "Headlines", written by Suan and lyrics by my good friend and supporter cum proof-reader for Alsictry.com ~ Tan Seok Kheng; second song is "My Sky" which is about HIV- infected orphans.

Mean while, I have formed my temporary 3-month-band "Project X" with Chan Tap Fatt (Guitar) and Tan Jun Xian (Drums), and me playing bass. We basically jem commercial tracks like Jason Mraz, Bryan Adams and some punks like Greenday and Nirvana. We hope to perform at least once before July 2005 as Jun Xian will leave the band for studies then.

I tried on playing bass for the new band in order to get new inspirations and methods of writing a song, and that sure does work, writing a song using a bass guitar actually kicks start the song by structuring the chord progressions and walking bass line, rather than thinking of the main melody first. It is a good experience and I've come up with some ideas on new songs. Hope to share later.

PAN GIO in Tragedy

                                            (Departed 29th May 2004)

Gio, the stunning beautiful Yamaha AsianBeat Asia Grand Final MC in Taiwan passed away on the 29th May 2004. I contacted her cousin and was told that Gio suffered an acute stomach illness that causes serious internal bleeding, died late evening in the hospital. She was at a local pub when she suddenly fainted and was rushed to hospital.

Gio was a good friend of Uglymen and we feel extremely sad on her sudden departure.

Funeral service will be on the 6th of June 2004, 11am morning at the Kaoshiung Cemetary. Anyone who wish to contact her family in Kaoshiuing, Taiwan can call the following number:  +886 9 3192 3193.

We love you Gio...

8th August 2003, 5.29am
I am super-super tired now. Just arrived in Alor Setar from Penang after completed our Carlsberg Centre Stage Contest. It was a good performance for us, but there are still room for improvement. We witnessed some great jazz work from Jeep Jazz Trio, with some very refined keybaord work. We would like to thank our friends (eh...no) actually all are family, for supporting us. I am glad I did not screw up the performance while not feeling well there.

5th August 2003, 5.12am
When practising a new version of Si Ai Bin, the band goes cracko with some loose playing and broken stuff. Is it in time for a last practise on Wednesday night? Till now, the newly arranged song has not been jemmed by all the 4 members together
